Huawei launched this new mid ranged smartphone which is also the World’s first ever smartphone with 4 Cameras. Yes, it comes with Dual Rear cameras as well as Dual Front facing camera too. Without any flare talks lets jump to the smartphone directly.
The placements are almost identical to Honor 8, but this one doesn’t have the infrared sensor that Honor 8 pro did. And the micro USB instead of USB type C. it’s not just the sides, even the back of the phone will remind you of Honor 8 Pro. The same texture, finish and color. This phone also happens to pick up its fair share of smudges. So where do the difference kick in?
It is not that obvious but if you notice carefully the Honor 9i is slightly narrower and shorter than 8 Pro. That’s because Huawei kind of shrunk the bezels on this device which made enough space to the front for a 5.9inch display with and 18:9 or 2:1 aspect ratio. It looks fabulous. The 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution means that display is sharp and bright enough to not give issues outdoors and the viewing angles are quite excellent too.
Above this display there’s a LED flash and a dual camera setup. So this setup contains one 13-MP primary sensor and another a 2-MP depth sensor. Now this setup is very similar to the vertical setup onto the back. This consist a 16-MP primary sensor paired with a 2-MP depth sensor. We’ve also got a single LED flash, the antenna lines and a fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor works fine, initial impressions is extremely fast.
The Honor 9i is quite slim at 7.5mm and weighs in at around 165gms, not quite heavy, it feels quite good in the hand. The build quality seems excellent, the metal build feels premium. Well this phone is not meant for single handed use exactly. The 2.5D glass to the front with curved sides do help grip.
Underneath the hood, the Honor 9i is powered by Kirin 659 SoC. This chip brings about a 10% boost from the Kirin 655 on the Honor 8 lite and the Honor 6X. It also has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage and 3340mAH battery fuels the phone. It runs on MUI 5.1 based on Android 7 Nougat. It does come with some bloatware out of the box and most of it is uninstallable. There’s no app drawer here but we can enable it from the settings menu. EMUI is one of the snappiest interfaces in the market. You get typical MUI features like app twins, simple mode and Nougat regulars like quick switch and split screen multitasking are present.
The camera interface is neat, quick shutter response, a simple toggle for portrait mode and HDR. There’s pro mode that offers manual controls the shutter speed here can go up-to 8 seconds and that is cool. Sadly there is no support for 4K video. The pictures are quite sharp with close to natural color reproduction. The Bokeh effect is really cool, which gives really focused images which you can show off.
The pricing in China is 23.99 YUAN that sums up to 23500/- in Indian rupees. But in India, the phone is priced at Rs. 17999/- that includes Rs. 2000 instant discount. In this price you get a humongous display with a not so humongous body, dual camera setup on front and back with a solid Snapdragon 630 equivalent.
